Finding the Best Medical Treatment: A Surgeon's Advice on Patient Research and Physician Passion

The Importance of Physician Passion

Dr. Pablo Gelber, MD, believes that a physician's passion is the fundamental driver of excellence in medicine. He states that for him, orthopedic surgery is not merely a job but an inspirational calling he would do for free. This profound love for his work in knee surgery and sports medicine forms the core of his professional philosophy.

Dr. Gelber advises those seeking a similar career path to prioritize passion above all else, including financial gain. He uses a powerful metaphor, describing passion as the "tree trunk" upon which all other professional branches—like study and skill—must be built. Without this foundational passion, he contends, even the hardest-working individual will ultimately fail to achieve lasting success and provide exceptional patient care.

Why Patient Research Is Critical

Dr. Pablo Gelber, MD, offers crucial advice for patients navigating the healthcare system. His primary recommendation is to conduct thorough research before selecting a physician. He warns against simply visiting the first doctor you find or even solely relying on a friend's recommendation, as these approaches may not lead you to the most qualified specialist for your specific condition.

He highlights a critical reality in modern medicine: although all physicians earn the same medical degree, vast differences exist in their experience, sub-specialization, and approach to treatment. This is especially true in complex fields like knee surgery, where techniques for cartilage transplantation and injury repair are rapidly advancing. Therefore, an informed choice is not a luxury but a necessity for optimal health outcomes.

The globalization of information provides unprecedented opportunities for patient education. Dr. Gelber points out that we live in a "very well-communicated world," where patients can research doctors, rehabilitation treatments, and surgical options from anywhere. This access empowers individuals to become active participants in their own healthcare journey.

He encourages patients to leverage this connectivity to search across "many different specializations." Whether seeking treatment for a knee condition, a heart condition, or a lung condition, the ability to compare expertise and approaches online allows for more personalized and effective care plans. Dr. Gelber sees this as a fundamental shift toward a more transparent and patient-centric model of medicine.

Choosing the Right Physician For You

Selecting a physician is one of the most significant decisions a patient can make. Dr. Gelber stresses that this process should be treated with the utmost seriousness, far beyond a casual choice. He compellingly argues, "You are not just going to take a coffee in the cafeteria. You are talking about health." This underscores that health decisions have lasting consequences.

The goal, according to Dr. Gelber, is to "find the best solution for a disease." This requires looking for the best advice available, which now includes reputable social media and online platforms dedicated to medical information. He commends the work of interviewer Dr. Anton Titov, MD, in creating a platform that helps patients contact and evaluate physicians wisely, calling it a "very, very smart" and excellent idea for modern healthcare navigation.

The Future of Patient Education

Dr. Anton Titov, MD, and Dr. Pablo Gelber, MD, agree on the transformative power of accessible information. Their discussion highlights a consistent message heard from leading experts worldwide: obtaining information from trustworthy, science-based sources significantly affects treatment outcomes. This shared vision points to a future where patient education is integral to successful medicine.

Dr. Gelber's expertise in fast-changing fields like orthopedic surgery and cartilage transplantation makes him a strong advocate for continued learning, both for physicians and patients. He expresses openness to future interviews to update the public on the development of knee injury clinical science, recognizing that sharing knowledge is key to progress.

Loving Your Body Through Proactive Care

Ultimately, Dr. Gelber's advice culminates in a simple yet powerful directive: love your body. He defines this love not as a passive feeling but as an active process of taking care of one's health and diligently seeking the best possible medical solutions when problems arise. This proactive stance is the best way to honor one's physical well-being.

This philosophy from Dr. Pablo Gelber, MD, merges the professional with the personal. His passion for his work is mirrored by his advice for patients to have passion for their own health. By combining a physician's dedication with an informed and engaged patient, the path to restoration and a full life becomes much clearer.

Dr. Anton Titov, MD: Professor Gelber, is there a topic or a question that I didn’t ask but that I should have asked? Is there anything in your interests and experience that you’d like to share with our viewers? You are a very keen sportsperson. I know that. So you practice what you preach. Is there anything you’d like to share?

Dr. Pablo Gelber, MD: There are two things I’d like to share. One, from my point of view, I’m really fortunate that I do a job that, for me, is not a job. I could do this for free because for me, it is inspirational. I like to do my job. Of course, it’s also my work and the way I can live. But I love what I do.

Some people say I have many people who ask me how to get into some position similar to mine. I say, just do it with passion. If you don’t do it with passion, even if you study hard and hard, but don’t love what you’re doing, you will fail. Don’t do this for money. Money can come after.

But from my point of view, passion is the main area out there. Passion is a tree trunk where you have to build all the different branches.

Secondly, my recommendation to patients is this. Now we are living in a very well-communicated world. This kind of globalization allows you to search. Do research, search on the web, or any other area about different doctors, physicians, rehabilitation treatments.

Because, unfortunately, although we all study for the same degree as a doctor, many different things make physicians different from each other. So my recommendation is to search, search, and search. Don’t just go to the first physician. Don’t even go to the physician who your friend recommended you. You should do an excellent search.

This platform you’re building up very wisely is the right way for patients to be informed. And patients can contact many different physicians with many different specializations. I think it is an excellent idea. What you are doing is very, very smart.

Anton, I appreciate your inviting me to share my work in knee injury conditions. I discussed how knee problems must be treated. It is an excellent example of how looking into the available information on the web can provide patients with better treatments.

So just love your body. The best way to love your body is to take care of it and try to find the best solution for a disease. It could be a heart condition, knee condition, lung condition. You have to look for best treatments.

You cannot just go inside the first clinic or physician that you see. You are not just going to take a coffee in the cafeteria. You are talking about health. So my recommendation is to look for the best advice you can obtain, in social media, for example.

Dr. Anton Titov, MD: I agree. Professor Gelber, we hear it again and again from leading experts worldwide, in many specialties of medicine and surgery, about how important it is for patients to obtain as much information from trustworthy, science-based sources before deciding on treatment. And it certainly can affect the outcomes significantly.

Professor Gelber, thank you very much for this conversation. It’s the most interesting. It’s fascinating. Orthopedic surgery is a very fast-changing field. Obviously, a lot of different skills are being applied to knee injury, people are moving more.

We hope to get back to you in the future for an update on knee injury and cartilage transplantation, to learn more about how this clinical science develops. Thank you very much for this conversation!

Dr. Pablo Gelber, MD: Thank you very much, Anton. Again, as I said before, thank you for inviting me! It’s been a real pleasure. And of course, we are open to doing some further interviews in the near future. Thank you so much! And goodbye to everyone from Barcelona, Spain.
